More than 30,000, or 91%, Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative customers are without power as of Tuesday morning in the wake of Hurricane Lowell’s arrival to the west of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau on Monday.
Damage assessments will begin this morning, depending on weather conditions.
“There is no estimated time of restoration for any outages at this time, and members should be prepared to be without power for an extended period,” according to a Facebook post by KIUC.
KIUC has posted an outage map showing the customers most affected here.
Fast-moving Hurricane Lowell reached its closest point to the main Hawaiian Islands on Monday night. The stormʻs core has moved 145 miles north of Līhuʻe, but the storm will still bring severe weather to Kauaʻi and Niʻihau for the next few hours on Tuesday.
Kaua‘i County officials urged the public on Monday to stay off the roads because of down utility lines and flooding.
The cooperative writes they will post more information about restoration efforts by the end of the day.
KIUC plans to share more information on what to expect regarding restoration by the end of the day today.
