Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies the public about statewide stream cleanup work to clear accumulation of debris, sediment and brush in an effort to improve drainage and waterflow through stream systems to prevent future flooding.
Streams throughout the state system were prioritized by those deemed most impactful to flooding conditions during storm events.
Coordination with county officials has been an integral part of completing work to its full extent to clear drainage and waterways, which will prevent flooding events like that seen during the kona low storms this spring.
KAUAʻI DISTRICT
- Crews on Aug. 16 began clearing Kainahola Stream in Kapaʻa along Kapaʻa Bypass Road; using an estimated $500,000 of authorized major disaster funding. This work will have no impact to the roadway. An estimated completion date will be released as work progresses.
No other streams or waterways were identified for clearing on Kauaʻi at this time.
Funding for stream mitigation is provided through a $9.5 million allocation from the state’s Major Disaster Fund as authorized by Hawai’i Gov. Josh Green and Hawai’i Legislature.
All work excludes weekends and holidays, weather permitting. Schedules and completion dates are subject to change.
Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Electronic message boards also will be posted to notify motorists about any planned closures.
