National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu issued a flood watch that will be in effect from Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon for the entire state as moisture along the eastern flank of Hurricane Lowell is expected to bring periods of heavy rain to the main Hawaiian Islands.
The threat of heavy rain will initially be highest along windward and mountain areas, then spread everywhere as winds become more southerly by Monday.
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas could be closed because of elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas might receive more significant flooding and property damage because of rapid runoff.
The public should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if flash flood warnings are issued.
