The Kaua‘i Police Department is set to offer free car seat safety inspections at three locations across the island in September.
Parents and caregivers can have their car seats checked by certified safety technicians at no charge.
The technicians also can answer questions and demonstrate how to properly install child passenger restraints.
The events are being held in partnership with the Kaua‘i Planning & Action Alliance and the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
The following inspections all run from 9 a.m. to noon:
Sept. 8: Wilcox Medical Center back parking lot. Appointments are available online.
Sept. 12: Area between Sudz Carwash and Gather Federal Credit Union at Kipuni Place in Kapa‘a.
Sept. 26: Target Līhuʻe parking lot.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 0 to 14.
The agency also reports that about half of all car seats are installed incorrectly.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to make sure children are using the appropriate restraint for their age and size, whether a rear-facing seat, forward-facing seat or booster seat, and to verify that the seat is properly installed.
