Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation notifies the public about installation of two raised crosswalks on Kauaʻi: one on Kūhiō Highway, between Ioane Road and Kalalea Road, in Anahola and another on Kaumualiʻi Highway, between Piko Road and Akemāmā Road, in Lāwaʻi.
Installation will require a single-lane closure, in one direction at a time, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4 in both locations. Work will be conducted 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. in Anahola and 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in Lāwaʻi.
All work and lane closures are weather permitting.
A large number of bus patrons are crossing the highways in both areas where the raised crosswalks will be installed.
Speeding is a factor as well, with 85% of vehicles exceeding the 35 mph speed limit in the area of the future Lāwaʻi crosswalk and 380 instances of vehicles speeding at 60 mph or faster, well above the posted 35 mph limit from April 23-27 in the area of the future Anahola crosswalk.
Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is installing traffic-calming devices — which can include speed tables and speed humps, among other types of installations — to promote pedestrian safety by providing drivers a physical reminder to reduce their speed.
