Forecasters continue to monitor Tropical Storm Lowell to the south of the islands, located about 1,070 miles east-southeast of Hilo as of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center 5 a.m. Aug. 30 advisory.

Lowell was moving to the west at 13 mph earlier Sunday and continues to pose no immediate threats to Hawai‘i.

The tropical storm had sustained winds of 50 mph, an increase from Saturday, with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extended outward from Lowell’s center up to 70 miles.

Forecasters continue to monitor the storm closely.

A general westward motion is expected to continue during the next 2 to 3 days, with gradual strengthening during the next few days. Lowell could become a hurricane by Aug. 31 or that night.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

Although it is too early to forecast with confidence what — if any effects — Lowell will have on the state, it is always better to take the time to prepare for possible severe weather, especially because a predicted more active hurricane season continues.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to review or develop preparedness plans now, before the next storm arrives.

People should also continue to monitor local radio broadcasts for official advisories, watches or warnings issued in your area. Forecasts for specific locations can be found on the National Weather Service website.

The public will be kept informed about any developments.
