Coastal flooding statement to be in effect through afternoon of Aug. 11 for parts of Kaua‘i County

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu advise that peak monthly high tides combined with higher-than-predicted water levels will lead to minor flooding during the first part of this week in low-lying coastal areas throughout the islands.

A coastal flooding statement will be in effect from noon Aug. 9 through the afternoon of Aug. 11 for Ni‘ihau and southwestern Kaua‘i shorelines.

Vulnerable low-lying coastal roadways, docks, boat ramps and other coastal infrastructure could be impacted by expected isolated minor coastal flooding around daily peak tide during the afternoons through at least Tuesday.

Flooding of normally dry beaches, minor coastal erosion and saltwater inundation in those areas is possible.

The public is advised not to drive through flooded roadways. Owners of properties in low-lying shoreline areas or near waterways should also consider moving any electronics, vehicles or other valuables to higher ground.

Boaters should monitor vessels to ensure mooring lines don’t get too tight and be aware of overwash around boat ramps at high tide. Any recreational watercraft on beaches, such as canoes, should also be secured or moved.

Tides are forecast to decrease by Aug. 12; however, coastal flooding could still be possible in select locations where water levels are running the highest.
