Visitor rescued after suffering apparent leg injury on Kaua‘i trail

A female visiting from Utah was rescued from the Nounou Mountain after suffering an apparent leg injury approximately one mile up the Sleeping Giant Trail in Wailua.

Kauaʻi Fire Department was dispatched shortly after 7:20 p.m. on Thursday. A preliminary report indicates first responders arrived at the trailhead shortly before 7:40 p.m. and proceeded up the trail with first-aid and rescue equipment, according to a press release from Kaua‘i County.

Crews reached the hiker, provided care for an apparent lower-leg injury, and used a wheeled litter to carry the patient safely down to the trailhead.

The hiker was able to travel to the hospital by personal vehicle. First responders cleared the scene shortly after 9 p.m.

The Kauaʻi Fire Department reminds hikers to prepare before heading out by wearing sturdy footwear, carrying water and a fully charged phone, letting someone know their route and expected return, and turning back when conditions or daylight change.

Personnel with the Kapaʻa Fire Station and Rescue 3 responded to the incident.
