Kauaʻi parents and caregivers will have multiple opportunities this month to have their children’s car seats inspected free of charge during a series of safety events hosted by the Kauaʻi Police Department and its community partners.
The department, in partnership with the Kauaʻi Planning & Action Alliance and the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, will offer free car seat safety checks at three locations throughout August. Police officers will also be available to speak with families about child passenger safety and answer questions.
The first safety check will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the back parking lot of Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe.
Additional events are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 29, at Waipouli Town Center in Kapaʻa.
Certified child passenger safety technicians will inspect car seats, demonstrate proper installation and use, and provide one-on-one guidance to parents and caregivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half of all child car seats — about 46% — are installed incorrectly, despite many parents and caregivers believing they have installed them properly.
Organizers said the events are designed to help families ensure their children are traveling as safely as possible.
