A woman was pulled from waters below the Nīnini Point Lighthouse, located north of Nāwiliwili Harbor, and was later pronounced dead.
On Aug. 1, at approximately 3:30 p.m., bystanders reported what appeared to be an unresponsive person floating in the water below the Nīnini Point Lighthouse, according to a news release from Kaua‘i County.
U.S. Coast Guard personnel pulled the individual to shore, where first responders from the Kaua’i Fire Department performed lifesaving measures but were unable to revive the woman. Medics then transported the individual to Wilcox Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The decedent has been identified as Millie Mallon, 35, of Līhuʻe.
An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death and any contributing factors. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play.
“The Kaua‘i Police Department offers its condolences to Ms. Mallon’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” officials stated in the release.
