Fausto weakened to a tropical depression on Wednesday morning and will continue to weaken as it passes north of the Hawaiian Islands through Wednesday night.

But the potential for localized heavy rainfall and flooding on Kauaʻi remains throughout the day Wednesday, county officials said.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the Kalalau Trail along the Nāpali Coast remains closed due to high stream levels. The Hāʻena Shuttle also remains suspended.

Kauaʻi can expect sea breezes to develop on Wednesday afternoon, bringing interior clouds and showers. While confidence in widespread flooding remains low, localized heavy downpours cannot be ruled out.

Breezy southeast winds are expected to return Wednesday night as the remnants of Fausto move away. More typical trade wind weather is expected to return Thursday into next week, with showers primarily affecting windward and mountain areas.

High surf along east-facing shores of the island chain generated by Fausto also is declining quickly as the storm passes by the state. The high surf advisory for Kauaʻi was canceled at noon on Wednesday.

Heed all advice from ocean safety officials, and remember: when in doubt, don’t go out.

The National Weather Service ended its advisories about Fausto at 5 a.m. on Wednesday.
