As hurricane season continues, residents will have an opportunity to learn how to prepare for storms, wildfires, and other emergencies during a free virtual community preparedness forum on Thursday.
North Shore Give will host the Zoom event on Thursday, July 23, at 3 p.m., featuring presentations by emergency management officials and public safety experts from across the state.
The forum will include an overview of the 2026 hurricane season from the National Weather Service, including how a forecasted strong El Niño pattern could influence weather conditions in Hawaiʻi.
The nonprofit’s executive director, Maylette Garces, explained that the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency will discuss hurricane and flood preparedness, while the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization will share strategies for reducing wildfire risks around homes and neighborhoods.
Additional presentations will highlight the Ocean Safety Bureau’s PulsePoint mobile app, which alerts trained volunteers to nearby emergencies where they may be able to assist first responders. Emergency communications specialists will also discuss how amateur radio and satellite technology can help maintain communication when traditional systems are disrupted.
The event will conclude with information about North Shore Give’s Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, program, which trains volunteers to assist their communities during disasters and emergencies.
The forum is free and open to the public.
Garces added that the event is designed to help residents “strengthen emergency preparedness through education, planning, and community involvement before disaster strikes.”
