Fantasy worlds filled with magical creatures, hidden sanctuaries and unforgettable adventures are coming to Kauaʻi as New York Times bestselling author Brandon Mull makes a special stop Tuesday at the Līhuʻe Public Library.

Mull, who wrote the popular “Fablehaven” series and other fantasy novels, will speak at the libraryʻs free public event at 2 p.m.

“It’s so weird because we are on vacation,” Mull told Kauaʻi Now with a laugh. He set up the event last minute because it just “seemed like a fun thing to do.”

His presentation is open to readers of all ages and will focus on creativity, storytelling, reading and his writing process. He added that his presentations combine humor with practical advice while encouraging audiences to embrace imagination.

“My basic premise as a speaker is that reading and creating build imagination,” he said.

For many readers, Mull is best known for the fantasy series centered on a brother and sister who discover their grandparents oversee a hidden sanctuary for mythical creatures. He said its like if you mix “Jurassic Park” with “Harry Potter.”

The series has sold millions of copies worldwide, been translated into more than 30 languages, and appeared in the New York Times bestseller list 20 times. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of “Fablehaven,” which is celebrated with the release of a new fully illustrated edition.

His newest fantasy series, “Guardians,” recently debuted on the New York Times best sellers list and introduces readers to a world where people bond with spiritual guardians that enhance their abilities.

While the new series targets experienced fantasy readers, Mull said he still recommends “Fablehaven” as the best introduction for families discovering his work.

“I try very hard to write the kind of books that a family could read together,” he said.

The author also is celebrating another milestone as “Fablehaven” moves closer to the big screen. The series is currently in development as a feature film through Angel Studios, with Mull serving as a consultant on the project.

“It let’s me help keep the story true to the spirit of the books,” he said. “Hopefully, readers will watch it and think, ‘That’s a cool version of the book.'”

Although his visit to the Garden Island is brief, Mull said he enjoys adding community events whenever he travels because it allows him to connect with readers in places traditional book tours rarely reach.

Mull added his books are good “if you’re looking for a story full of imagination, with young leading characters, thatʻs smart and twisty and imaginative, so that if an adult reads it, they will find it pleasantly surprising — where reading it to your kids ensures everyone can enjoy a good time.”

He hopes his book can inspire kids to “think reading might be fun.”

Before the event, residents can participate in the library’s NAMI Peer support group, a space that offers respect, understanding, encouragement and hope for people living with mental illness.

The gathering is open to the public, free and confidential.

After the event, residents can gather for the Adultʻs Coloring Cafe and color alongside free coffee and refreshments from our Friends of the Līhuʻe Library.

The library is located at 4344 Hardy St. in Līhuʻe. For further information on its updated community calendar, click here.
