Visitor from Virginia rescued off popular Kaua‘i trail after suffering apparent knee injury

A male hiker visiting from Virginia was airlifted from the Kalalau Trail after suffering an apparent knee injury.

Kaua‘i Fire Department received a report of a hiker on Wednesday shortly after 10 a.m. who was reportedly injured near the trail’s 1.5-mile marker.

Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 located the hiker on the trail shortly after 11 a.m. Due to the location, rescuers conducted a short-haul operation from a landing zone at Hanakāpīʻai Beach to safely extract the hiker, according to a news release from Kaua‘i County.

Air 1 then transported the hiker to Princeville Airport, where he was transferred to Hanalei Fire Station personnel and awaiting medics shortly after 11:30 a.m.

The scene was cleared shortly before 12:50 p.m.

Personnel with the Hanalei Fire Station, Rescue 3, and Air 1 responded to the incident.
