Kauaʻi residents and visitors are reminded that pedestrian crossing on Kūhō Highway in Kapaʻa is prohibited unless in a marked crosswalk.

Hawai‘i Department of Transportation installed “No Pedestrian Crossing” and “Use Crosswalk” signs fronting Kountry Kitchen to let pedestrians know there is a crosswalk near the Kapaʻa Library just 200 feet and a one-minute walk away.

In a survey conducted by the state department in December of 2023 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., 170 pedestrians crossed outside of the crosswalk in the vicinity of Kountry Kitchen, according to a news release from the department on Thursday. In 2025, there were 38 pedestrian fatalities statewide and between 2021 and 2025, there were six on Kaua‘i.

To avoid crashes resulting from pedestrians crossing at unprotected and unexpected locations, signs have been posted to stop the dangerous behavior.
