Update at 6:35 p.m. July 10, 2026: A wastewater discharge advisory for Kapaʻia Sewage Pump Station is canceled and all temporary warning signs were removed.
State health officials originally issued the advisory June 30 following an estimated 1,000-gallon wastewater spill at the pump station on Kaua‘i.
Original updated post from June 30, 2026: Cleanup is underway following an estimated 1,000-gallon wastewater spill Tuesday morning due to a communication failure at the Kapaʻia Sewage Pump Station, located near Kūhiō Highway and Ma‘alo Road.
State health officials issued a wastewater discharge advisory because of the spill. The public is advised to stay out of waters near the sewage pump station until the advisory is canceled.
Hawaiʻi Department of Health says sewage discharge from the nearby manhole could have entered Hanamāʻulu Stream.
The spill occurred between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.
Kaua‘i County officials reported the spill was the result of a communication failure between the pump station’s control system and pumping equipment, causing elevated wastewater levels in the pump station’s wet well.
“Wastewater eventually overflowed from a nearby sewer manhole onto the roadway, may have entered a nearby stream, and may have reached state waters,” according to a county news release. “County crews promptly pumped down the wet well and ponded wastewater, disinfected the affected area, and are continuing response and cleanup efforts.”
The pump station is operating normally, and the communication issue was resolved.
