One of the North Shore’s most anticipated events returns later this month to Hanalei.

The 17th annual Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge is Kauaʻi’s only open-water race and will feature participants of varying ages and experience levels in the bay’s calm summer waters.

Last year, 221 registered swimmers participated, with 203 completing the event.

Hobey Beck, President of the Namolokama Canoe Club Board of Directors, told Kauaʻi Now, that swimmers from across Hawaiʻi and the mainland keep returning year after year to enjoy swimming in the beautiful bay.

“For many families, the Swim Challenge is a summer tradition they look forward to every year,” Beck said. “It brings generations together, celebrates healthy lifestyles, and helps support the operations of our canoe club.”

The swim challenge will take place on Saturday, July 25, with check-in starting at 7 a.m. at the Hanalei Pier. Organized by the Namolokama Canoe Club, this event serves as a fundraiser for the club’s community paddling initiatives.

During last year’s event, the non-profit raised more than $20,000.

The race categories are tailored for keiki, experienced swimmers, and newcomers to open-water racing. Participants can enter divisions for children aged 8 and under, as well as age groups 9-12, with options including a 1,000-meter race, a 3,000-meter race and a 1,000-meter mask and fin race.

Beck explained that the “keiki race is designed for swimmers of all abilities, and parents are welcome to walk alongside younger children in the shallow water if they wish.”

Snorkels are prohibited in the mask-and-fin category.

Swimmers will compete for medals awarded to first-, second-, and third-place finishers in each age division.

Hanalei Lifeguards and Kauaʻi Fire Department personnel will be at the race again to provide safety support. Experienced volunteers on stand-up paddleboards also will be stationed throughout the course to monitor swimmers and provide assistance as needed.

“We also have an escort boat in the bay to keep an eye on the swimmers,” Beck said.

She added that the event is “pure Hanalei: community, challenge and aloha.

“Whether you’re racing for a medal, cheering from shore, or diving in for fun, the Hanalei
Bay Swim Challenge promises an unforgettable day in the water,” she said.
