Recent incidents show pattern of increased fuel thefts on Kauaʻi
Residents and visitors should remain vigilant following an increase in fuel thefts from vehicles reported across the island.
The Kauaʻi Police Department reports that recent thefts have involved suspects cutting gas tank lines from parked vehicles and drilling holes in gas tanks. These incidents have occurred in residential neighborhoods, business parking lots, hiking trail entrances, and other locations.
In addition to the financial loss of stolen fuel, victims may discover damage to fuel tanks, fuel lines, or gas caps, resulting in costly repairs.
The Kauaʻi Police Department encourages the public to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:
- Park vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible.
- Secure vehicles in garages or behind locked gates if available.
- Install motion-activated lighting or security cameras around parking areas.
- Avoid leaving vehicles unattended for extended periods with full fuel tanks when possible.
- Report suspicious persons or vehicles observed lingering near parked vehicles, especially during nighttime hours.
The Kauaʻi Police Department advises residents not to confront suspicious individuals. Instead, report suspicious activity immediately by calling dispatch at 808-241-1711.
