A pedestrian sustained serious injuries in a traffic collision the night of June 19 on Kūhiō Highway in Līhuʻe.

Kauaʻi police officers responded at about 10:45 p.m. Friday to the collision near the Laukōnā Street intersection.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 58-year-old Hanamāʻulu man was walking westbound along the eastbound shoulder of the highway when he attempted to cross the roadway and was subsequently struck by a 2008 Toyota van driven by a 77-year-old Kapaʻa man.

The pedestrian was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe in critical but stable condition.

Because of the extent of his injuries, however, he was later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment.

Police do not think speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Toxicology results are pending. The investigation is ongoing.

Kūhiō Highway was closed about 2.5 hours Friday night while officers investigated at the scene. Traffic was diverted through nearby residential streets during the closure.

Anyone who might have witnessed the crash is urged to call Kauaʻi Police Department Officer Russell Himongala at 808-241-1617.
