Kaua‘i Fire responds to 2 blazes 12 hours apart

No injuries were reported following two structure fires on Wednesday, June 10.

Kaua‘i Firefighters received a report about the first blaze shortly after 6:20 a.m. at a residence near ‘Anini Beach at 6:20 a.m. The second was reported about 12 hours later at a home in the Kapahi area of Kapa‘a.

When crews arrived on scene to the first fire at approximately 6:40 a.m., firefighters discovered a two-story residence with active flames on the second floor, according to a press release from Kaua‘i County. Crews established a water supply, deployed attack lines, and extinguished the fire, which was confined to the building of origin. Firefighters then checked for fire extension and ventilated the structure.

KFD Fire Prevention Bureau investigators took over the scene and conducted an investigation.

Firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 9 a.m.

Damages are estimated at $1,453,000 to the structure and $75,000 to its contents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Personnel with the Hanalei, Kapaʻa, Līhuʻe, and Kaiakea fire stations, Rescue 3, the Fire Prevention Bureau, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.

In the second incident, KFD personnel received a report shortly after 6:30 p.m. of a structure fire on Ioana Street in the Kapahi area of Kapaʻa.

According to a preliminary report, upon arrival shortly before 6:40 p.m., firefighters found a one-story, single-family residence with flames and heavy black smoke coming from the living room, according to the news release. The fire extended toward the garage, where the resident reported that fuel tanks were stored and a vehicle was parked.

The occupant of the residence was safely outside when firefighters arrived.

Crews deployed attack lines, shut off electricity to the residence, and extinguished the fire, which was confined to the building of origin.

Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 8:20 p.m.

KFD Fire Prevention Bureau investigators took over the scene and conducted an investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Damages to the structure and contents are estimated at $304,000.

Personnel with the Kaiakea, Kapaʻa, and Līhuʻe fire stations, Rescue 3, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.
