All roads reopen in Kīlauea, residents allowed to return homes after nearly 10 hours of police activity
This story was updated at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026. Kaua‘i police reported just before 9 p.m. Saturday that they are now searching for 51-year-old William “Billy” Sinclair of Kīlauea in connection with a murder in Hanalei and separate shooting incident that resulted in one person being treated for minor injuries, both of which happened during the early morning hours Saturday.
Kaua‘i Police Department notified the public via social media at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, June 6, that all roadways previously closed for nearly 10 hours throughout the day in Kīlauea are now open again.
Residents also are allowed to return to their homes in the area.
Kaua‘i police closed down Kīlauea Road, between Kolo Road and Kaikala Street, just before 8:30 a.m. Saturday and advised the public to avoid the area altogether because of an ongoing police activity and investigation in that neighborhood of Kīlauea.
Some commenters either from the neighborhood or had heard from someone who lives there wrote on the road closure update thread that gunshots were heard coming from a property there and one person was grazed by a bullet.
Another person commenting in the thread said it had become a “hostage situation.” They admitted to not knowing what was fact or rumor in everything that had been said throughout the day about what was happening, but the road was blocked off and it seemed like a hostage situation, with a man with a fun and others trapped inside the home.
Until there is official word from police about the circumstances behind what developed Saturday, commenters also admitted that most of the information they were getting and hearing was coming through “Coconut Wireless.”
Some people in the area earlier Saturday sent video and reported to social media outlet HHHNewz that there was a large police response in the area, with some residents who live immediately around the ongoing investigation location evacuated.
They told the social media outlet that police were responding to a situation involving a man who neighbors said has been an ongoing issue for months.
One person said the man allegedly persistently fired rounds from a gun during the early morning hours throughout the past week. Neighbors also said the man even reportedly pointed a gun at people during previous altercations.
A second video shared with HHHNewz showed police carrying rifles while in tactical gear at the scene, with multiple units responding.
Information reported earlier Saturday relied on the road closure notice from Kaua‘i police, plus reports and videos shared with HHHNewz and conveyed here to alert the public about the situation.
