As World Ocean Day approaches, Surfrider Kauaʻi has planned several events and volunteer opportunities to support its mission of protecting the ocean and addressing current and future threats.

World Ocean Day is celebrated annually on June 8 to honor the world’s oceans, highlight their significance, and inspire conservation efforts. The day is globally acknowledged to raise awareness about the impact of human actions and promote the sustainable management of marine resources.

As part of World Ocean Day, Surfrider Kauaʻi, in collaboration with the Kauaʻi Society of Artists, will host the eighth annual “Washed Up Marine Debris Art Show” from Saturday, June 6, to Friday, June 26. The art will be created from trash and debris found by artists and transformed into artwork.

The third annual Beach Clean-Up and Festival for World Ocean Day will take place at Nūkoliʻi Beach, a segment of coastline known for significant marine debris accumulation on Kauaʻi.

The beach clean-up will be ongoing throughout the day, and the festival will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, on the large grassy field next to the Outrigger Kauaʻi Beach Resort. Parking and event access will be available on the public beach side.

The festival will feature conservation and environmental education booths, cultural demonstrations and ʻike sharing, local vendors and sustainable artisans, activities for children, hands-on learning, ocean-themed crafts, and community engagement.

Registration remains open for sustainable vendors, artisans, and conservation and environmental education booths. Donations are also welcome for the raffle and community fundraiser. For more information and registration forms, visit its event page on the World Ocean Day website.
