Westbound traffic on Kūhiō Highway will be routed through Weke Road as three raised crosswalks are installed overnight in Hanalei, beginning Thursday.

The three crosswalks will be installed in or near the brown circles on the screenshot of Google Maps.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will close one lane of traffic from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, for the installation of the three crosswalks as part of the Kūhiō Highway Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Princeville to Waikoko project.

The three crosswalks will be installed at Hanalei School, near the Waiʻoli Church, and near Malolo Road. The locations were based on coordination efforts between the Department of Transportation and various community groups and members through multiple public meetings and discussions.

Westbound traffic will be routed through Weke Road, while eastbound traffic will remain on Kūhiō Highway.

The Department of Transportation is installing traffic-calming devices, including raised crosswalks, speed tables, and speed humps, to promote pedestrian safety by providing drivers a physical reminder to reduce their speed.

For more information on existing and planned speed humps or raised crosswalks, visit the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Safety Improvement Map. Work is weather permitting. For weekly lane closure information, visit the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation website.
