A ride on Honolulu’s Skyline rail means more than just getting from Point A to Point B this month — it will help shape the future of Hawaiʻi’s youth.

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi is taking Great Futures Day to new heights this year with a unique community partnership, transforming everyday commutes into meaningful support for the state’s youth.

John and Lori Katahira — who helped organize the initiative — will donate $1 to Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi for every Skyline ride Monday, May 18, in support of programs that serve island children and teens.

“Great Futures Day is about coming together as a community to support our youth,” said Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi President and Chief Executive Officer Paddy Kauhane in an announcement about the special fundraiser. “This initiative makes it easy for everyone to participate — simply by taking a ride, you’re helping invest in the next generation.”

Great Futures Day will be celebrated statewide Wednesday, May 20, activating Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi clubhouses throughout Oʻahu and Kauaʻi with vibrant and youth-driven events.

The day highlights the creativity and potential of Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi youth, from the organization’s signature lemonade stands — where club members learn entrepreneurship and leadership skills — to games, performances and community gatherings

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi aims to rally 40,000 donors to give $40 each as it marks 50 years of service in 2026, reinforcing its mission to provide safe spaces, mentorship and life-enhancing programs for Hawaiʻi’s youth.

Funds raised will directly support programs that promote academic success, healthy lifestyles and character development for thousands of Hawaiʻi children and teens.
