Special ceremony, exhibit mark 40th anniversary since USS Missouri recommissioning

The Battleship Missouri Memorial this month will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the USS Missouri’s recommissioning with a special ceremony and exhibit opening.

More than 40 former crew members who served aboard during the ship’s recommissioning era will return Sunday, May 10, to once again board the historic battleship at Pearl Harbor for the milestone anniversary.

“Mighty Mo” was recommissioned in 1986 during the Cold War, serving as a powerful symbol of American strength and resolve. This ceremony honors the sailors who brought her back to life and carried her legacy forward.

The program will feature remarks from distinguished speakers, including representatives of the Battleship Missouri Memorial and several officers and crewmen who served aboard during the ship’s recommissioning era.

EVENT DETAILS

  • WHEN: 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 10
  • WHERE: Battleship Missouri Memorial; Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, O‘ahu
  • BASE ACCESS: Complimentary round-trip shuttle service from Pearl Harbor Visitor Center

The ceremony will conclude with a traditional Hawaiian blessing by kahu Kelekona Bishaw, serving as official dedication of a new onboard exhibit.

Guests will be invited below deck for an exclusive first look at “The Boys Are Back in Town: The 40th Anniversary of the Recommissioning of USS Missouri.”

The immersive exhibit showcases the monumental effort to return the “Mighty Mo” to active service during the Cold War. Featuring never-before-seen archival photos and artifacts, visitors will experience the journey of the crew as they reawakened the USS Missouri and embarked on a historic global deployment.

The exhibit will be open to the public from May 10 through May 2027.
