University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa grad programs earn national recognition

Ten graduate programs at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa are in the nation’s top 50, and an additional 17 are in the top 100, as ranked by the 2026 U.S. News and World Report’s Best Graduate Schools released April 7.

John A. Burns School of Medicine also placed in the nation’s top tier for best medical schools for primary care, and University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy tied for No. 92 in the nation.

The highest ranked Mānoa programs were in the William S. Richardson School of Law:

  • Tied at No. 18 for best environmental law programs and law schools with most grads in federal clerkships.
  • No. 24 for best part-time law programs.
  • Tied at No. 41 for best international law programs.
  • Tied at No. 47 for best dispute resolution programs.
  • Tied at No. 48 for best legal writing programs.

Other Mānoa rankings

  • Shidler College of Business tied at No. 22 for best international programs.
  • School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology tied at No. 40 for best Earth sciences programs.
  • John A. Burns School of Medicine ranked No. 42 for most graduates practicing in rural areas.
  • John A. Burns School of Medicine also ranked No. 45 for most graduates practicing in primary care.

“[University of Hawaiʻi at] Mānoa’s strong showing in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings underscores our commitment to excellence in teaching, research and student success,” said University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Interim Provost Vassilis L. Syrmos in a release about the latest rankings. “These results reflect the talent and dedication of our faculty, students and staff, and Hawaiʻi can take pride in knowing their university is preparing the next generation of leaders and changemakers for our community and the world.”

Rankings were based on multiple factors including:

  • Research activity (such as publications and citations).
  • Student and alumni outcomes (employment and earnings).
  • Quality assessments (from peers and recruiters).
  • Student selectivity (grade-point average and test scores).
  • Faculty resources (doctoral degrees awarded and student-to-faculty ratios).

School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene

  • Tied at No. 55 for best nursing school–master’s.
  • Tied at No. 62 for best nursing school–doctor of nursing practice.

  • Tied at No. 57 in the United States, the 21st consecutive year the college has been listed as one of the nation’s top 100 education programs.

Thompson School of Social Work and Public Health

  • Tied at No. 89 among the nation’s top public health schools and programs.

College of Social Sciences

  • Tied at No. 90 for the nation’s best in clinical psychology.
  • Tied at No. 92 for public administration.

  • Tied at No. 97 among nation’s best in physics.

  • Tied at No. 106 among the nation’s best for fine arts programs.
