Officials on Kauaʻi are calling on residents, emergency responders and community groups to take part in a statewide effort to strengthen wildfire preparedness at the upcoming Hawaiʻi Wildfire Summit 2026.
The two-day event, hosted by the Kauaʻi Fire Department, is scheduled for May 7 and 8 and will bring together agencies and organizations from across the islands to address growing wildfire risks and improve coordination.
“Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility,” said Kauaʻi County Mayor Derek Kawakami. “When we work as one team with a shared mission, we are stronger and better prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead.”
The summit opens May 7 at the Kauaʻi Philippine Cultural Center, where attendees will gather for an afternoon kickoff session, followed by a networking reception and dinner. Organizers say the opening will highlight how Hawaiʻi’s wildfire preparedness efforts connect with broader statewide and national initiatives.
Events continue May 8 at the Kauaʻi War Memorial Convention Hall with a full day of discussions focused on prevention, mitigation and emergency response.
Topics are expected to include land management strategies, community resilience, and inter-agency coordination.
The summit is being organized in partnership with the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency, the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, along with other state and county partners.
Registration costs $55 and includes meals and networking events.
Officials said the gathering aims to build stronger partnerships across Hawaiʻi while reinforcing a shared responsibility to protect communities and natural resources as wildfire threats continue to evolve.
