Thursday weather updates: Ponding, down trees close roads; Kalalau Trail, Polihale State Park also closed

A flood advisory was issued this morning and will last until 10:45 a.m. for the island of Kaua‘i.

At 7:39 a.m., radar indicated moderate to heavy rain over the Garden Isle. Rain is falling at a rate of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour. Modest rises have been observed on some area streams, including the Wainiha River on the north shore.

A high wind warning is now in effect until 6 a.m. Friday for the north and interior mountain areas of Kaua‘i, replacing a previous high wind watch for the Garden Isle.

National Weather Service Honolulu office forecasters report that south winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, are expected in the warning areas.

Weather advisories

  • Flood watch.
  • High surf advisory for south-facing shores now in effect until 6 a.m. Friday. Large disorganized surf will quickly rise throughout the day and peak later today into tonight, with wave heights of up to 8 to 12 feet. Heed all advice from ocean safety officials; remember, when in doubt, don`t go out.

Facility closures

The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the Wailua River to all vessels.

The Kapa’a Refuse Transfer Station will not be accepting green waste until further notice due to weather conditions.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the Kalalau Trail and Polihale State Park until further notice. The Hā’ena  Shuttle has also been suspended until further notice.

The HI5 Redemption Center in Kōloa will be closed on Thursday, April 9.

County services and facilities may close on little to no notice, depending on the severity of the incoming storm and its effects.

Road closures

  • A portion of Kalihiwai Road leading to the beach in Kīlauea is closed due to downed trees and power lines.
  • A portion of Ho’one Road in Poʻipū is closed due to heavy ponding.
  • A portion of Weliweli Road in Kōloa is closed due to heavy ponding.
  • A portion of Makaha Ridge Road is closed due to a downed tree. 
  • A portion of Puolo Road in Hanapēpē is closed due to debris blocking the roadway from high surf.
  • The portion of Kekaha Road has reopened as crews have removed the downed tree.

Pe’e Road in Poʻipū has been reopened for through traffic.

Officials note that Kūhiō Highway near the Hanalei Bridge may be closed with little or no advance notice, particularly if a flash flood warning is issued.
