
A single-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Anahola left one man seriously injured and led to the arrest of the driver, according to a press release from the Kauaʻi Police Department.
Following an investigation, officers arrested the driver, identified as 61-year-old Roland Vierra of Anahola, on suspicion of first-degree negligent injury, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, reckless driving, inattention to driving, and leaving the scene of a crash involving substantial bodily injury.
He was later released pending further investigation.
Authorities said the crash occurred at about 3 p.m. on March 28, when a 2002 Dodge pickup truck driven by a 61-year-old man was turning onto Hokualele Road from Kūhiō Highway.
The vehicle crossed the center line and struck a guardrail.
A 46-year-old man riding in the truck’s cargo bed was ejected during the crash and suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment.
Kauaʻi police said the driver did not stop at the scene to render aid.
Traffic on Hokualele Road was diverted around the crash scene while the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an investigation.
