Update at 3:32 a.m. Sunday, March 22, 2026: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report surf along northern shorelines of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau has fallen below advisory thresholds and will continue to diminish through today.
Therefore, the high surf advisory that was previously in effect for those north-facing shores of both islands was canceled. It was originally set to expire at 6 a.m. Sunday, March 22.
Story originally posted at 7 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2026: A northly swell is building in and will create large surf for north-facing shores, peaking Saturday afternoon, March 21, and then slowly declining Saturday night.
The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday, March 22, for the northern shorelines of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, as large breaking waves rising to 12 to 16 feet are forecast to rise as the swell builds in.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous along the coasts under the advisory.
The public should heed all advice from ocean safety officials: When in doubt, don’t go out.
