Kaua‘i County officials urge the public to stay vigilant as a slow-moving kona low storm is expected to bring a prolonged period of hazardous weather to the island through the weekend.

Rain began falling on Tuesday (March 10). According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, periods of heavy rain may lead to flash flooding, with repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible as deep tropical moisture moves over the island. Strong south to southwest kona winds may also develop later in the week, with the potential for damaging winds capable of downing trees and power lines.

Boats are moored at Port Allen Small Boat Harbor on Kauaʻi. Hawaiʻi Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation officials recommend boaters check moorings/lines, bilge pumps, secure cabins and hatches along with other precautions as necessary as a powerful Kona low storm impacts the state. Weather conditions may also become favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms, particularly Friday into Saturday.

The County of Kaua‘i Office of Economic Development announced that the Kapa‘a Sunshine Market at Kapa‘a Beach Park is closed today due to inclement weather.

The market is scheduled to resume next Wednesday.

Also, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advises travelers on transpacific flights to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure time and for interisland flights, 90 minutes before departure time.

County, state, and federal officials will continue to monitor the situation and actively coordinate in preparation for this potential event.

Residents should be prepared for periods of intense rainfall, rising streams, and localized flooding, along with gusty winds and unstable weather conditions as the system develops later in the week.

County facilities and services may close with little to no notice.

There are no road closures at this time. However, county officials say that Kūhiō Highway near the Hanalei Bridge may be closed with little or no advance notice, particularly if a Flash Flood Warning is issued. Utilities and other services may also be disrupted.

No refuge areas have been opened at this time. However, refuge areas islandwide are on standby, should the need arise.
