Wildfire preparedness meetings for Kaumakani tenants set for this month
The first annual wildfire preparedness outreach and education opportunity is set for Kaumakani with two meetings on Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31.
Gay & Robinson Inc., which supports West Kauaʻi communities through land management and community partnerships, will conduct the meetings as part of the County of Kauaʻi’s wildfire safety requirements for plantation camp districts. They are being coordinated with the Kauaʻi Fire Department, the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency, the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization, and the County Planning Department.
“These meetings are about practical readiness—how to prepare to evacuate and how we’ll stay connected as a community, especially to support our kūpuna and any households that need help in an emergency,” said Sherri Waialeale, housing coordinator for Gay & Robinson.
The meetings will be held at Gay & Robinson’s main office, 1 Kaumakani Ave., at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 30, and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31.
Meeting topics will include:
- Household evacuation readiness (go-bags, medication lists, pet plans);
- Evacuation routes;
- Defensible space basics and reducing ignition risks close to homes;
- Smoke readiness and health considerations;
- How the community will communicate and support kūpuna and households needing assistance.
