With severe weather conditions predicted to begin Tuesday, Kaua‘i County officials are urging the public to prepare.

Gov. Josh Green also issued an emergency proclamation in advance of the storm system expected to bring heavy rain, flooding, strong thunderstorms and damaging winds across the Hawaiian Islands this week.

The National Weather Service forecasts a period of unsettled weather with the potential for heavy rain and thunderstorms that could lead to flash flooding as well as strong winds. A powerful Kona storm is expected to impact Kauaʻi beginning Tuesday and potentially lasting through the weekend, bringing the risk of heavy rain, flash flooding, damaging winds, and the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms.

Residents should be prepared for periods of intense rainfall, rising streams, and localized flooding, along with gusty winds and unstable weather conditions as the system develops later in the week, county officials stated in a news release Monday.

County services and facilities may close on little to no notice, depending on the severity of the incoming storm and it’s effects.

County, state, and federal officials will continue to monitor the situation and actively coordinate in preparation for this potential event.

Officials remind the public to use 911 only for life-threatening or time-critical emergencies.

The public is advised to check conditions before venturing out for hiking, river, or beach excursions. River and stream crossings, recreational trails, and other outdoor recreation areas may quickly become hazardous. During severe weather, emergency rescues may not be possible. Do not cross swollen rivers or streams; always check with a lifeguard at any lifeguard station before entering the ocean. Know before you go.
