Surfrider Kaua‘i is entering its 20th year and looking for volunteers who want help protect, clean and celebrate Kaua‘i waters heading into the nonprofit organization’s next 20 years.

“We likely have a need for whatever you’re able to offer,” said Surfrider Kaua‘i in a recent email.

Some activities need volunteers’ sweat, some need their enthusiasm, some need their brains and some just need them to show up for support.

“If you’re willing to help, you can make a difference,” the organization said.

As a Surfrider Kaua‘i volunteer:

  • Work side-by-side with other volunteers toward a common purpose.
  • Get the fulfillment from doing things that make a positive difference on Kaua‘i and ocean health.
  • Meet new — and old — friends from around the island.
  • Learn how to be a “citizen scientist” by testing Kaua‘i’s water spots.
  • Have opportunities to see rarely seen — or sometimes inaccessible — areas of the island.
  • Talk story and learn about Kaua‘i’s history.
  • See first-hand some of the challenges facing Kaua‘i and how everyday actions can make a difference.
  • Educate and enjoy fun outreach activities with Kaua‘i youth.
  • Help guide Kaua‘i restaurants and hotels to adopt eco-friendly practices.
  • Enjoy celebrations, art and cultural events, pau hana get-togethers and get some Surfrider swag.

The organization knows people are busy with life, work and ‘ohana, but whether people can help a couple of hours per week, per month or per year, it always appreciates volunteer contributions.

How much someone commits is really up to them.

“The nice part of being a volunteer is that you can always say no,” Surfrider Kaua‘i said. “We understand you may have to say no more than you say yes. That’s OK, but when you’re able to say yes, we will always be happy to see you again.”

At the same time through, the organization thinks once someone experiences the fun and camaraderie of working alongside other Surfrider volunteers, these outings will soon become a highlight of their week.
