UPDATE: Kauaʻi, Niʻihau north and east shorelines remain under high surf advisory
Update at 3:34 a.m. Feb. 25, 2025: The high surf advisory for north and east shorelines of the Kauaʻi and Niʻihau has been extended until 6 p.m. today.
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu expect surf of 15 to 20 feet through the morning along north-facing shores, dropping to 12 to 16 feet this afternoon.
For east-facing shores, surf of 10 to 14 feet is forecast through this morning, then falling to 8 to 12 feet by this afternoon.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents along those shorelines will continue to make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous.
The public is advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
Update at 4:10 p.m. Feb. 24: A high surf advisory has been extended for the north and east-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau until Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service canceled all high surf warnings and issued a high surf advisory until 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
A long period north-northeast swell peaked early this morning, producing much larger than normal surf across some coastlines, which caused Ocean Safety Bureau officials to advise against all ocean activities for north-facing shores until Wednesday.
Surf heights are expected to reach 18 to 24 feet this evening, dropping to 15 to 20 feet for north-facing shores and 12 to 16 feet this evening, dropping to 10 to 14 feet for east-facing shores.

Original post at 9:15 a.m. Feb. 24: Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising no swimming or other ocean activities at Hanalei Bay and all north-facing shores due to high surf and hazardous ocean conditions.
Kaua‘i County lifeguards advise no recreational water activities along all north-facing shores.
As a safety precaution, Ocean Safety Bureau officials have posted warning signs and are monitoring the area.
A high surf warning is in effect through 6 p.m. today for north- and east-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, according to the National Weather Service. Surf up to 18 to 25 feet along north-facing shores is forecasted, and up to 12 to 16 feet along east-facing shores.
