Mālama Kaua‘i turns 20 years old this June!

The community has shown for the past 2 decades what’s possible when care is chosen instead of division, resilience instead of fear and aloha instead of isolation — even if this is one of the most remote islands in the world.

That spirit matters more than ever right now.

Families are feeling stretched. Systems are strained. Many community members are carrying uncertainty about what comes next.

In moments like this, the answer isn’t distance — it’s deeper connection.

So instead of hosting a gala or formal dinner for the big anniversary, Mālama Kaua‘i is doing something that feels truer to who it is.

“We’re coming together,” said Mālama Kaua‘i Executive Director Megan Fox in a recent email. “To honor 20 years of community-rooted work, Mālama Kaua‘i is organizing what we hope will be the largest Mutual Aid Fair the island has ever seen.”

Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 13 will host a day dedicated to sharing skills, resources and real support with one another — “a living expression of lōkahi,” Fox said.

Imagine a space filled with:

  • Skill-sharing workshops.
  • Free services and practical support.
  • Local organizations offering resources.
  • Information about housing, food access, wellness, mental health and emergency preparedness.
  • Activities and support for keiki and kūpuna.
  • Food, music and connection.

“A day where neighbors help neighbors, knowledge is shared freely and resilience is built together,” Fox said. “This is not something we want to do for the community. It’s something we have to build with the community.”

Individuals, families, organizations, farmers, businesses, healers, educators and everyday changemakers are invited and encouraged to to be part of the 20th birthday celebration and community day.

You might:

  • Lead a workshop or skill-share.
  • Host a resource tent.
  • Offer a free service.
  • Feed people.
  • Volunteer.
  • Sponsor the event.
  • Help organize behind the scenes.
  • Contribute in another way that feels right.

Those who feel called to be part of this milestone moment can fill out this online form or email to info@malamakauai.org so to connect with Mālama Kaua‘i.

“Twenty years ago, Mālama Kaua‘i began with a simple belief: that caring for our ʻāina and each other creates stronger communities,” Fox said. “Let’s gather to celebrate how far we’ve come, and to strengthen the relationships and practical skills that will carry Kaua‘i forward in staying connected, prepared and grounded in aloha.”
