Resource hub to support Kauaʻi against the growing threat of coconut rhinoceros beetle
A new community-driven initiative has formed to serve as a Kauaʻi-focused resource hub offering practical information on coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) identification, prevention, and treatment.
CRB Action Kauaʻi supports residents, landowners, farmers, businesses, and community groups responding to the growing threat of the invasive pest that impacts coconut and other palms as well as taro, pineapple, and bananas.
The new CRB Action Kauaʻi website is designed to help residents understand available options, make informed treatment decisions, and connect more easily with existing programs, professionals, and official response efforts.
“Across Kauaʻi, people are seeing changes in palms they care deeply about and are seeking clear, trustworthy guidance on how to respond to this growing threat,” said Merlyn Ruddell, coordinator of CRB Action Kauaʻi. “There is excellent work already underway by state, county, and independent organizations. Our goal is to make information easy to access in one place, while helping residents navigate practical next steps that fit their property, priorities, and regulatory requirements.”
CRB Action Kauaʻi is intended to complement and amplify—not replace—the work of agencies and established organizations. The initiative brings together relevant information and emphasizes early action, prevention practices, and informed decision-making aligned with official guidance.
Supported by an advisory group that includes agricultural practitioners, treatment specialists, environmental advocates, and individuals experienced in policy, land stewardship, and palm management, CRB Action Kauaʻi works to:
- Share updates from official CRB response efforts;
- Highlight educational opportunities and outreach events;
- Encourage reduction of breeding sites and early reporting;
- Support coordination among neighbors and the entire community;
- Provide information on pest management options;
- Coordinate grassroots efforts to support policies and actions that help defeat CRB;
- Offer practical do-it-yourself guidance and links to tools and materials;
- Respond to inquiries via chat and contact buttons on the website.
The organization also serves as a forum for shared learning and respectful dialogue, recognizing that landowners may choose different approaches based on land use, location, regulations, and values—while working toward the common goal of protecting Kauaʻi’s palms, food sources, plants of cultural importance, and landscapes.
