Multi-agency search for missing Kaua‘i man suspended after discovery of human remains
A 3-day multi-agency search for a missing Kaua‘i man was suspended Saturday afternoon (Jan. 31) after human remains were discovered in the waters off Kahili Beach in Kīlauea.

First responders on Saturday located the remains during continued air, land and sea search efforts for 19-year-old Kapa‘a resident Matthew Packard-Asai, who was last seen early Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 28) near the beach.
The remains are thought to be those of Packard-Asai; however, positive identification is pending DNA confirmation.
Authorities continue to investigate.
“Our thoughts are with Matthew and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Kaua‘i Fire Chief Michael Gibson in a release. “We are deeply grateful to all the agencies and volunteers who worked tirelessly in this search, and we extend our heartfelt support to Matthew’s family as they navigate the days ahead.”
Personnel from Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Police Department, American Medical Response, U.S. Coast Guard, Kaua‘i Search and Rescue, American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources participated in the response.
“With these recent developments, we ask that the family’s privacy be respected as the identification process continues,” said Interim Kaua‘i Police Chief Elliott Kalani Ke in the release. “We also want to express our appreciation to our partners and the community members who supported the search for Matthew.”
No further information is available at this time.
American Red Cross provided canteen services on Kahili Beach for first responders during their search for Packard-Asai.
The nonprofit said it brought in partner The Salvation Army and provided food and drink. Red Cross volunteers also were at the site to help as needed in support of first responders as they scoured the area for those 3 days looking for the missing 19-year-old.
Kaua‘i first responders received a report just after noon Wednesday about two fisherman — including Packard-Asai — being swept into the water while fishing from rocks near the northern point of Kahili Beach.
The other man — with a laceration to his leg — was safely brought back to shore by responding authorities and then transferred to American Medical Response for additional medical care.
