Original post: A high surf advisory has been issued for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i till 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, afternoon buoy observations from NW Hawai‘i offshore buoy 51001 suggest that an incoming north-northwest (330-340 degree) swell will likely result in advisory-level surf along exposed north- and west-facing shores as it moves into the islands.
This swell is expected to peak during the overnight hours, then will gradually decline on Wednesday.
Surf heights of up to 12 to 16 feet are expected along north-facing shores and up to 8 to 12 feet along exposed west-facing shores.
Conditions will be moderate. Strong breaking waves and currents will make swimming dangerous.
