High surf advisory issued for north- and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau

A high surf advisory is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau as a northwest swell moves through the area, bringing elevated surf and hazardous ocean conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Surf heights are expected to rise this afternoon, peaking overnight. North-facing shores could see waves of 15 to 20 feet, while west-facing shores may experience surf of 10 to 15 feet.
The advisory will remain in effect through 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23.
The National Weather Service said the swell will generate strong breaking waves and powerful currents, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers and ocean users. Officials described the expected impacts as moderate but cautioned that conditions could change quickly.
Ocean safety officials urge the public to follow all posted warnings and guidance.
Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water if conditions appear unsafe and to use extra caution along exposed shorelines during the advisory period.
