71-year-old bicyclist in hospital after crash on Kūhiō Highway

A 71-year-old biking on Saturday afternoon was injured in a traffic collision with a truck along Kūhiō Highway, prompting a temporary lane closure as police investigated.

The collision occurred at about 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, when a 2003 Toyota pickup truck exited the 7-Eleven parking lot in Līhu‘e and attempted to turn northbound onto Kūhiō Highway, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.

The truck struck the bicyclist who was traveling northbound on the highway. Police said preliminary information indicates the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The bicyclist was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and later released. The truck’s driver, a 50-year-old Līhu‘e man, was not injured.

One northbound lane of Kūhiō Highway was closed for approximately 90 minutes while officers with the police department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Police continue to investigate.

Kauaʻi police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Henshaw at 808-241-1616. Anonymous tips may be provided to Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i at 808-246-8300.
