High surf warning issued for Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau shores as large swell approaches
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻhau, as a powerful northwest swell is expected to bring dangerous ocean conditions.
The warning is scheduled to take effect at midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and remain in place through 6 p.m. on Jan. 15. However, the warning may be extended, canceled, or adjusted as conditions evolve. An earlier high-surf warning for the same shorelines was issued early Monday and remained in effect through Tuesday evening as elevated surf continued to impact the islands.
Weather officials say surf heights along north-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau are expected to reach 30 to 40 feet, while west-facing shores could see waves of 20 to 30 feet.
Officials warned that entering the water during the high surf warning is extremely dangerous and could result in serious injury or death. Large breaking waves may also pose a threat to people near shorelines, including those on land.
Beachgoers and ocean users were urged to avoid affected shorelines and to follow guidance from county lifeguards and emergency officials.
