Four local Kauaʻi men were officially welcomed into law enforcement on Tuesday after graduating from the 102nd police recruit class for the Kauaʻi Police Department.

Family members, friends, fellow officers and the Kaua’i County Council gathered on Dec. 6 for the 102nd Police Recruit Class graduation ceremony at the Kaua’i War Memorial Convention Hall for recruits Kent Morano, Brandon Chun, Kaleo Josiah and Daylin Huni.

They were celebrated and pinned, after taking their oath symbolizing their transition from trainees to sworn police officers.

“It was tough, but we all made it, all the boys,” said Morano, one of the newly sworn officers.

Morano, a former Allied Universal security officer and U.S. National Guardsman, said he now serves the county where he grew up, adding he hopes “to make his family proud and provide for them.”

The ceremony recognized the officers’ six months of intensive training and preparation required to serve with the Kauaʻi Police Department. Following graduation, each officer is paired with a seasoned field training officer for a six-month shadowing period.

Among the attendees were interim Chief of Police Kalani Ke and Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami, who praised the graduates for completing the academy and highlighted the critical role of local officers in policing their own communities.

Chun joins the department after driving for UPS. In his free time, he values his time with his partner and two kids. Huni, who previously worked part time at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, enjoys lifting weights and playing video games in his spare time.

Josiah hopes to serve as a role model for Kauai’s youth. He is grateful to his wife and family for their support.

The four offices bring a unique set of skills, experiences and perspectives to the force, further enriching the diversity of the Kaua‘i Police Department and are poised to make meaningful contributions to the community.

Morano encouraged anyone interested in joining law enforcement to “just try it, you know, you only got one chance at life, so just go for it.”
