The Kauaʻi Bus will begin operating a new public bus route next week, expanding islandwide service and introducing electric buses to the county’s transit system for the first time.

County officials said the new 900 and 950 routes will launch Monday, Jan. 5, running between Anahola and the Waimea Athletic Field. The routes will provide expanded access across Kauaʻi, with stops at Līhuʻe Airport in both directions.

“We are excited to introduce the new 900/950 routes and highlight our commitment to a cleaner, greener Kauaʻi,” Mayor Derek Kawakami said in a statement.

The service will mark the debut of the Kauaʻi Bus system’s newly acquired battery electric buses. The vehicles were purchased using a combination of federal and local funding, including support from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Vehicle Program, which helps transit agencies modernize fleets with cleaner technology.

“The addition of electric buses represents a meaningful investment in sustainable infrastructure and the health and well-being of our island community,” Kawakami said.

County officials said the Anahola-to-Waimea route is expected to improve connectivity for residents, commuters and visitors by providing direct access to educational, recreational and commercial areas along Kauaʻi’s southern corridor.
