Kaua’i police investigate Kūhiō Highway crash that ejected child from SUV

A child was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after being ejected from a sport utility vehicle in a single-car crash on Kūhiō Highway, police said.
The crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. near the Wailua Golf Course when a northbound 2025 Toyota SUV sideswiped a guardrail and then struck a utility pole, causing the vehicle to spin. During the collision, a child inside the vehicle was ejected and sustained serious injuries, according to the Kauaʻi Police Department.
The child was taken to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe for initial treatment and later transferred to the Kapiʻolani Medical Center on Oʻahu for further care. Police said a 35-year-old woman from Wailua is believed to have been driving at the time of the crash.
The two other occupants in the SUV were uninjured, police said.
Kūhiō Highway was closed for about two hours while the department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Authorities said toxicology results are pending, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
