Kauaʻi’s Office of Economic Development opens applications for 4th annual youth climate class
Kaua‘i’s Office of Economic Development is now accepting applications for its 4th annual Youth Climate Class, a hands-on program for high school students focused on sustainability and climate action.
The semester-long course begins in February and is open to students across the island. But enrollment is limited to 15 participants.
The island-wide program introduces students to how climate initiatives are carried out at the community level through site visits, meetings with local leaders and field trips. Participants will explore six focus areas: clean energy, natural resource management, waste reduction, local food systems, smart and sustainable communities, and green workforce and education.
“It’s about learning by doing, connecting with the land, and discovering how their ideas can help shape a more resilient future for Kaua‘i,” said Nalani Brun, Director of the Office of Economic Development. “This class gives students the opportunity to see themselves as part of the solution.”
Students also will partner with a local business of their choice, helping complete foundational sustainability actions that can lead to recognition through the Hawai‘i Green Business Program.
Classes meet once a week on Wednesdays after 3:30 p.m., with occasional weekend sessions depending on partner availability. The program is offered at no cost and is designed to provide students with practical experience and professional skills they can use in future careers.
Applications must be submitted online by Jan. 9 at 11:59 p.m. Students interested in sustainability, career exploration or community impact are encouraged to apply early.
