UPDATE: Flood watch extended for Kauaʻi, Niʻihau as threat of flash flooding continues
Update at 6:17 p.m. Dec. 18, 2025: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu have extended the flood watch for Kaua’i and Ni’ihau until 6 a.m. Friday (Dec. 19) as a threat of flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected to continue through tonight.
Moderate to heavy rain showers are expected to increase over the islands this evening and continue overnight.
Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas could be closed because of elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas could receive more significant flooding and property damage because of rapid runoff.
The public is advised to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if a flash flood warning is issued.
Original story published at 3:53 p.m. Dec. 16, 2025: The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau through Thursday evening.

Bands of showers and thunderstorms associated with a front approaching from the northwest will move over the western end of the state and stall beginning tonight.
According to forecasters, heavy showers and occasional thunderstorms over the next few days, combined with saturated ground from rainfall earlier this week, have resulted in flooding concerns for Kauaʻi County and the island of Oʻahu.
Significant flooding may occur due to the overflow of streams and drainage systems. Roads in several areas may be closed, and urban or low-lying areas may experience property damage due to runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.
The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
