High surf advisory issued for north- west-facing shores of Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau

A high surf advisory is in place for north- and west-facing shores on Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau till 6 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a large, short to medium period west-northwest swell (280 to 320 degrees) is currently coming in this afternoon. This swell will mix with the gradually fading medium period north swell (350-360 degrees).

A larger, medium period north-northwest (330-350 degree) swell will then fill in tonight and peak Thursday.

Surf heights up to 10 to 15 feet along north-facing shores and 8 to 12 feet along west-facing shores are expected. Surf will build to 12 to 16 feet along north-facing shores on Thursday.

Strong breaking waves and currents will make swimming dangerous.
