UPDATE: Southbound lane of Kūhiō Highway on Wailuā Bridge reopen
Update at 6:22 p.m. Dec. 5, 2025: Hawai’i Department of Transportation notified the public earlier this afternoon (Dec. 5) that the mauka (southbound) lane of Kūhiō Highway on Wailuā Bridge, between Kuamo‘o Road and North Leho Drive, was again open after emergency utility work was needed earlier during the day on electrical lines.
That portion of the roadway was previously closed so crews with Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative could complete emergency work that involved installing pacers needed to be placed on electrical lines to prevent arcing being caused by high winds.
Original story published at 9:58 a.m. Dec. 5, 2025: The Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative is doing emergency work today on Wailua Bridge.
The mauka, or southbound lane of Kūhiō Highway between Kuamo‘o Road and North Leho Drive is closed till noon to allow crews to place spacers on the electrical lines to prevent arcing currently being caused by high winds.
Motorists are advised to drive slowly and safely around the workers doing this emergency work.
KIUC will notify the public when the lane is reopened.
