First responders rescue visitor on Kalalau Trail on Thanksgiving
A 58-year-old California visitor was rescued from Kalalau Trail on Thanksgiving due to alleged heatstroke symptoms.
Personnel from the Līhuʻe Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly after 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27. First responders arrived near the 1.5-mile landing zone and found the hiker, who was ambulatory and waiting at the landing zone.
The hiker was able to walk unassisted to Air 1, but in accordance with safety procedures, rescuers escorted him into the helicopter, which then transported him to Princeville Airport.
Upon landing, the hiker was transferred to Princeville fire station personnel and American Medical Response. He refused further medical care.
The scene was cleared shortly after 6:05 p.m.
